  • Cayman Islands Turtle Farm

The Cayman Islands Turtle Farm is located in West Bay on Grand Cayman. Founded in 1968, the farm set out to try and replenish Cayman’s extremely endangered sea turtle population. 31,000 turtles have been released back into the wild since the project began. Controversial in some eyes, the farm also acts as a commercial-breeding facility. Providing the Islands with the meat to make such cultural dishes like Stew Turtle. This program also helps with conservation, as it reduces the amount of poaching in local waters. Visitors are welcome to come observe the turtles in every stage of growth, from six ounces to six hundred pounds! Keep an eye out for opportunities to see turtles released into the wild.

Some locals even wear their pirate costumes to work! This year the festival will start on  November 8th and finish on November 18th and will be another eleven fun filled days with music, street dances, competitions, games, wonderful local food and drink, kids day, glittering parade, sports events for everyone, Heritage Days, pirate invasion and fireworks galore!

On the first Saturday we have a mock ‘pirate invasion’ from the sea! Two old-time sailing vessels, loaded with pirates make a Saturday surprise landing at the bowl-shaped George Town harbour with the pirates capturing the Governor. Cayman Facts 14/30 : Stingray City

    Stingray City Grand Cayman

Southern Atlantic stingrays have been congregating at the Stingray City Sandbar for many years. It started with fisherman cleaning their catch of the day and when the fish guts were thrown overboard the stingrays eventually gathered to feast on the discarded guts. Soon the stingrays associated the sound of a boat engine with food. As this practice turned into a tradition, divers realized that the stingrays could be fed by hand. Today, tour and excursion boats, along with private watercraft, gather at Stingray City in large numbers. Passengers disembark and enter the chest-high water to interact with the stingrays. The boats' proprietors bring along with them pails of chunked-up squid meat, which they dispense by hand to the animals, thus attracting dozens of the creatures to the feeding spot.
